What is version control?

Version control is a method of managing multiple variations of the same document. It is the method used for incrementing, tracking, and recording changes in documents that occur over time in a systematic manner. Versioning organizes the history of changes in a logical order and allows for review or version rollbacks if needed.

CAM supports Creating, updating, copying elements from the workspace, folder, and document to Teams through its versioning and version control features.

To put it simply, versioning is the method of numbering, organizing, and displaying recent changes in a document so teams can see how and when others have tweaked digital files.

Version history is available in copy commands for workspace, folder, and documents.

Why use document version control?

A DMS with Version control is important because you know everyone is working from the same version of a document. It solves the problems of tracking changes by retaining versions in a centralized location. When someone wants to make changes, they must go through a check-out and check-in process which ensures that after changes are made and the file is checked-in, a new version of the file is created and the version sequence is incremented. All prior versions are retrievable and can be promoted as the latest version. This process happens automatically, which eliminates user confusion and the need to manually apply versioning schemes.
